By train.

Bikes travel on Romanian trains, with conditions.

A full-size bike needs a bike ticket and a train marked with the bike icon in the CFR timetable (cfrcalatori.ro). The fee depends on distance.

Folded or boxed, it rides free as hand luggage.

On busy trains, staff can refuse bikes without a ticket. Buy yours in advance.

By car.

From Vienna: about 7 hours, all motorway. From Budapest: about 5 hours, all motorway.

You’ll need road vignettes for Austria and Hungary, and the Romanian rovinietă for national roads. All can be bought online.
